NEW CONTACT AND A CHALLENGE

A memory which would appeal to many of us from the latest SOB to make contact with Bernard; unfortunately he cannot make this September but he obviously remembers some of us. He wrote to Bernard: as follows:

Hello Bernard,
We do not know each other, but I have picked up your details from the Shrigley Association Website.
I attended Shrigley from 1965 to 1970, and find exploring your site brings back treasured memories for me.

I recognise the names of a number of fellow students, within the Association website/blogs, including those from my years: John Bergin, Manus Dunlop, Tony Quinn and Joe Doogan, as well as a few from the year up from mine, Terry Devine and Michael Gormley.

I would be interested in joining the Association - and having access to news updates, etc - and it would indeed be wonderful to make contact at a future reunion.

I attach a photograph (in which some of the above, and myself, feature). I would also love to access links to any photographs relating to 1965-60, that people may have.

AN URGENT PLEA FROM BERNARD O, GERRY W, PATRICK O AND JOE LSEPTEMBER 2018 REUNION PLANS:

Some inter personal e-mails have passed between our Organiser, Bernard O’Neill and some members concerned with how the bookings were going and, indeed, whether the reunion was to go ahead at all.
The Association has no funds and Bernard, as others have found in the past, is in a dilemma between reserving rooms etc at Shrigley and Savio house in the hope that sufficient numbers will attend and being hit with penalty payments if too few actually turn up.
The last count was less than ten confirmations

The following message from Bernard shows the problem:
"A deposit was requested for all bookings, if not full payment received, and the balance to be paid by the July date. This was not a deadline for bookings.
As stated previously, without funds, cannot pay deposits and/or other expenses, and at the last meeting kindly requested bookings as soon as possible. In the letter that went out with the booking form, I also requested bookings asap.
Hope this helps clarify. Bernard"
One further point is that, although this September marks the 60th (Oh, good grief), anniversary of the 1958 intake, as always every, barely, surviving SOB is warmly invited.
PLEASE, GET TO YOUR PCs, TABLETS & PHONES.

A message from our President:

Dear past pupils and friends of don Bosco.

The feast of Easter is approaching and I would  like to share with you a great joy and hope in my heart which comes from a secret of coming days.
Easter feast may show us a great example of sacrifice of Jesus for all humanity, for all our sins. He died to save us and our souls for eternity.
I invite you during next days to stop and contemplate the mystery of salvation.
May don Bosco will be example for us as well. He also gave his whole life to serve people and to save them, especially young and needy. Deeply inspired by Jesus, he was able to live difficult life with a great joy and love.
I wish you all to be able to see a sense of all things and situations hapening in your everyday life, whether positive or negative...
May the salesian joy we have received will be reply to anything what will come.
I pray for all past pupils and friends of don Bosco in the world.

Michal Hort
President

Easterhouse Gathering Marking Don Bosco's Feastday 2018

From Joe and Patricia Doogan: Report of the Scots' gathering to celebrate Don Bosco's Feastday:

Once again we had a large gathering of the Salesian family here in Scotland for the feast of St. John Bosco.
On Sunday 4th.February the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, the Cooperators and the Shrigley Old Boys met in the parish of St. John Bosco in Easterhouse, Glasgow.

After meeting up with old friends we had our Mass concelebrated by Fr.Hugh Preston SDB and Fr.Charles Garick SDB, both coming up from England bringing the one and only Bro. Donald McDonald SDB. A Scottish Old Boys' reunion wouldn't be the same without him.

The music was sung angelically by the children from St. Vincent De Paul in East Kilbride led by Maria Novani. They certainly created the spirit of Don Bosco, the highlight being  psalm 34  ' Taste and see  '
After the Mass the Shrigley Old Boys held a brief meeting to organise our social calender for the year, with four dates to be found (including our trip to Shrigley in September )

Old Boys present; Greg Bell, John Bergin, John Clark, Michael Crossan, Terry Devine, Joe Doogan, Brendan Gill, Vincent Gill, Felix Gilfedder, Jim Hughes, John Meehan, Bill McEleny, John Moran, Michael Pratter, Joe Quinn, Lindsay Reid.
Apologies; Tony Quinn, Louis Skehal, Vincent Mochan, MIchael Brady;, ohn McArthur,  Fr, Bill Bergin.

During the elaborate buffet we were able to mingle with old friends in the Sisters and the Cooperators and, of course, regale each other with our exploits while at Shrigley..  Roll on next year.
